Our Process
Q: How do you make a backyard safe for kids?
A: We design with soft surfaces, fencing, shaded areas, and play features. Fences help contain the play space to the backyard only, keeping others out. Soft surfaces like lawns and synthetic turf are great for giving the kids open spaces to run around and play with their friends. Furthermore, play structures give the excitement of swings, forts, and slides. But kids are notorious for using their imagination and seeing everything in the backyard as a toy. Dry creek beds with medium-sized rocks can give kids hours and hours of balance practice as they step from one rock to the next. Each boulder or short retaining wall becomes a fort they conquer.
Q: Can you combine kid and adult spaces?
A: Yes. As a family-centric design-build company, we balance play areas with entertainment zones for the whole family. The whole point of a well-designed backyard is to entertain the kids, not too close, but not too far from the parents, so parents can supervise from a distance while enjoying their time relaxing, cooking, or playing their own outdoor games. There are common outdoor features that the whole family enjoys, of course, such as pools, firepits or fireplaces, and sports courts. These features bring all generations together.
Q: What are the most important factors to consider when designing a backyard with kids?
A: The three main factors to implement in any backyard for families with kids are:
- Level yard
- A nice fence
- A lawn to keep the mud and erosion away after rain
A level yard allows the kids to play freely without worrying about any dangerous drops. It also keeps toys and balls from rolling into unwanted areas. A level backyard, not exceeding 5 degrees, can host all sorts of fun structures, like a bounce house or soccer goals.
Fences make great neighbors and well-behaved kids. With a fence, kids understand their boundaries and where to play and where not to play.
Lastly, having a lawn or synthetic turf is important for keeping the yard mud- and dirt-free. It also covers all rocks and uneven trip hazards, increasing safety and worry-free playtime. Without a proper lawn, soil erodes, creating uneven surfaces. The roots of grass penetrate the soil and bind it, creating a soft layer that also catches falling debris.
Q: How long do kids use play structures for?
A: We have found swing sets and play structures to be very popular for ages 2 to 11. Usually, after the youngest child turns 11, swing sets disappear, and sports court areas for other sports become very popular.
Q: Is having a nice backyard good for teenagers?
A: Most of our clients with teenage kids request that we create a backyard where the kids and their friends hang out. This way, they are not somewhere getting into trouble, and parents feel safe knowing their kids are at home. After all, if teenagers do something unwise, their parents are there to intervene and course-correct.
