The homeowners, who live in a modern house, wanted their backyard to reflect the same contemporary style while incorporating elements that enhance both utility and visual appeal. The project involved various elements, including fencing, hardscape, softscape, and accessories, creating a harmonious and functional outdoor living area.
Given the home’s modern architecture, the team installed modern alternating picket fences adorned with special decorative hardware. These elements inspired by Japanese Torii gates create a unique and aesthetically pleasing boundary.
A stone trash can pad was created on the right side of the yard for easy access from the driveway. Decorative stone was also placed around the AC units, enhancing the visual appeal. Instead of a solid walkway, 24 by 24-inch stepping stones provided a more natural and inviting path. Privacy plants were strategically placed to shield the outdoor kitchen from the neighbor’s view, contributing to the softscape with beautiful pots adding color and focal points.
To address the lack of outdoor faucets, high-pressure water lines were extended from the irrigation system, adding a conveniently placed faucet. Mexican beach pebbles created a visually appealing and maintenance-free ground cover, with weed fabric laid underneath. Drip irrigation systems were installed in the pots to ensure efficient watering.
A Wi-Fi and Bluetooth-enabled sound system was installed, featuring six strategically placed speakers that direct sound inward, minimizing disturbance to neighbors. The backyard also expanded with a new fence line and retaining walls, creating a seamless and attractive boundary. Aluminum fencing complemented the existing bamboo, creating a harmonious natural environment.
Privacy trees were planted to create a natural barrier between the yard and neighboring properties. The fencing strategy included both wooden and aluminum materials, with three gates installed for easy access, allowing for leaf blowing and retrieving lost items.
Due to limited sunlight, synthetic turf was chosen for its durability and low maintenance. Seven large trees were removed to improve sunlight and airflow. The turf created a mud-free play area suitable for various activities and capable of handling heavy foot traffic without damage.
Aluminum under the decking was installed to waterproof the area, directing water into a drainage system. This space now houses an outdoor kitchen with a pizza oven, grill, and future expansion plans. Porcelain tiles were used on the patio, with composite decking maintaining design consistency. The area has heaters and a fire feature, making it usable year-round.
A cost-effective outdoor TV was installed, enduring the elements without issue. Lighting, fans, and a mosquito-repellent system enhance comfort and usability. Storage cabinets were added for convenience.
The property is lower than the neighbor’s, necessitating an effective drainage system. Rain chains were used as decorative downspouts, leading to underground pipes that manage water flow. A French drain captures surface water, preventing erosion of the retaining walls. The turf is slightly sloped for optimal drainage.
Wooden structures, including storage and play features, were added for both aesthetic and functional purposes. A stone patio with boulder steps enhances the yard’s appeal.
Low-maintenance flowers and plants were selected for the softscape, with terraced retaining walls creating vibrant pockets of color.
We also installed a tree house along with ta and gave the kids something to play with. It offers a perfect blend of functionality and aesthetic appeal, creating distinct zones for play, relaxation, and entertainment.
